3D terrain maps are the most crucial and defining foundation for the administration, exploration and commercialization of airspace and the growth of related industries. The UAS industry in particular will be prohibited from moving forward without precise 3D maps.
We already have some basic air corridors which allocate airspace for a variety of purposes. These corridors, as currently defined, are sufficient for full-scale aviation. But once we enter the world of UAS, we need far more detailed definitions.
Airspace is three-dimensional, and the lower airspace is filled with obstacles such as buildings, vegetation, power-lines, communication towers and other types of infrastructure. We need extremely precise and up-to-date 3D maps to define this airspace if we want to start exploring it commercially – effectively a 3D “road system” in the air.
